Expatriates to Canada from cricket playing nations established cricket in Canada. There is a long history of cricket in Saskatchewan dating back to the early 1900’s. At one time there were teams located in many small towns of Saskatchewan such as Battleford, Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Estevan, etc. These teams travelled on a regular basis to Regina and Saskatoon in the summer to play matches. Players also represented Saskatchewan on the provincial level and many tournaments were played at Kinsmen Park in Saskatoon. The new home of the cricket ground is at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm and Zoo off the Attridge Drive.
Cricket is slowly gaining popularity and support in Saskatchewan. Regular cricket is established in both Saskatoon and Regina under the Saskatchewan Cricket League. A new team from Yorkton joined the league this year. A recent influx of immigrant population in major centres is increasing the demand for playing surfaces and grounds in Regina and Saskatoon. Many immigrants are playing non competitive cricket in cities such as, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and Estevan.
In 2010, there was only one team in Saskatoon and four teams in Regina registered with the Saskatchewan Cricket Association. This number grew to 16 teams in 2013. Five teams from Saskatoon, ten from Regina and one from Yorkton are playing in the Saskatchewan Cricket League. The Saskatoon Cricket Association is also involved in youth coaching. Regular coaching sessions are organized at the Forestry Farm in the summer and the Saskatoon Field House in the fall. Youth outdoor practice is scheduled on Sundays from 2 pm - 4 pm.
Senior teams practices are scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 5 pm - 9 pm at the cricket grounds located inside the Forestry Farm Park and Zoo in Saskatoon. Outdoor practice continues from May-September. League games are played on weekends either in Saskatoon or Regina. Indoor practice is usually held at the Saskatoon Field House from October - April. We are thankful for all kinds of help and support we get from the City of Saskatoon, Forestry Farm-Saskatoon Zoo, Saskatchewan Cricket Association and Cricket Canada which enables us to continue play and enjoy cricket in Saskatoon.
All visitors and dwellers of Saskatoon and surrounding areas are welcome to join the association or clubs. Any member of the club can be contacted for more information or email us for details.
